Saksenaea är en mycket ovanlig humanpatogen. Växt i sårodlingar bör föranleda omedelbar kontakt med infektionsläkare för korrekt medicinsk behandling och med kirurg för ställningstagande till revision.
Misstankar bör väckas vid sårinfektioner efter traumatiska skador som förvärras trots vanlig behandling.
Sårodling är nödvändig för diagnos, men kan vara negativ på rutinodlingsmedier.
Tillståndet kräver snabbt insatt behandling med liposomalt amfotericin B (eller azol) samt radikalt kirurgiskt avlägsnande av nekrotisk vävnad.
